about the show
Goldfish is a tender, character-driven play about the complexities of love, responsibility, and the fragile line between dependence and independence. At the heart of the story is Albert, a bright 19-year-old who has just left home for college. Unlike most college freshmen, Albert isn’t escaping a loving family—he’s fleeing from the wreckage of one. His father, Leo, is a charismatic but deeply irresponsible man with a crippling gambling addiction. For much of Albert’s life, he has acted more like the parent in their relationship, managing their finances, household, and emotions. Eager for a fresh start, Albert falls for Lucy, a witty and guarded classmate with a sharp edge. But Lucy is carrying her own emotional burden: a volatile relationship with her mother, Margaret, a once-glamorous woman now unraveling under the weight of alcoholism and bitterness. As the young couple explores their first real connection, the chaos of their respective parents' lives comes crashing back in. Leo and Margaret, both emotionally stunted and flawed, threaten to sabotage the stability their children are trying to build. The play examines cycles of dysfunction, the desire to escape inherited trauma, and the fierce, often messy ways people try to care for one another. Equal parts humorous and heartbreaking, Goldfish ultimately asks: can love, once broken, be mended?
